Two of our projects won titles at the Victorian Architecture Awards this year.
Balam Balam Place and the New Footscray Hospital racked up four awards and three commendations between them when the winners were announced.
Conceived as a revived heart of the Brunswick community, Balam Balam Place — by Kennedy Nolan, Finding Infinity and Openwork — blends heritage architecture with bold new constructions.
We supplied the light gauge steel framing that supports the distinctive angular roof, clad with a yellow Colorbond façade, which received a commendation in the Award for Steel Architecture.
The wider project also won awards for Public Architecture, Urban Design and Heritage Architecture, with a commendation for Sustainable Architecture.
A jury described it as “a wonderful contemporary building housing community and cultural spaces”.
"Balam Balam Place is an exemplar for urban renewal and civic space. Thoughtfully considered, but with a sense of being incomplete, it enables the community to imagine what happens next."

And there’s more. . .
We also played an integral role in constructing a feature ceiling at the entrance of the New Footscray Hospital, led by Cox Architecture and Billard Leece Partnership.
A major public infrastructure project in Melbourne’s western suburbs, this won the The William Wardell Award for Public Architecture.
Known affectionately as “the People’s Hospital”, the jury said it “demonstrates the capacity of architecture and design to make a significant contribution to contemporary health care and community wellbeing”.
Both projects have also been put forward for the National Architecture Awards.
New Footscray Hospital is up for the Public Architecture prize, while Balam Balam Place is a contender for the Urban Design category.
The winners will be announced on October 29.
